May 16 EbayWhen I was buying skin care products on Ebay I found something interesting. It seems that the more high-end the brand is, the less items under its name are on sale. Is this simply because there are fewer users of expensive products or because these users are so rich that they don't care to go on ebay? or are there other possible reasons?
Just a quick glance:
Sisley: 183 items on sale
La Mer: 685
Shiseido: 843
Clarins: 1017
Lancome: 2063
Clinique: 2633
Mary Kay: 5532
Then I found an outlier: Olay 537, and I believe that there are a bunch of other low-end brands that have few items on sale...Seems that the more accurate theory should predict that both high-end and low-end brands have few items on sale, while the medium products have the biggest market... April 20 IT的作用?很多人讨论过了IT的作用，从经济学家到Matrix的制作人。不外乎那么几种看法： IT对生产效率有/没有贡献；IT最后可能/不可能反过来控制人类， 等等。。。
今天走在阳光明媚的路上，不知道怎么就想起了这个话题，我觉得无论IT怎么样，其中的个人空间blog确实改变了我，可能还有其他一些人，写日记的方式。以前我们都是找个漂亮本子，甚至是带锁的本子，来写写自己的心里话。之所以要这样，很多时候是因为这些话我们不愿意跟别人说，或者找不到别人说。自从有了blog，我便很少在日记本上写东西了。很多本来是悄悄话的话，都被在头脑里加工成presentable,可以说给大众的话，然后写在了blog上。这个过程看似没有什么，但天长日久，我发现自己再也不怎么喜欢说那些腻腻歪歪，磨磨汲汲的话了。 想法也越来越“正统”， 说话特爱上纲上线，什么都爱总结个道理在写出来。（比如现在这篇）
我觉得很多我的同学也有这种倾向，或许是因为比较严肃的blog点击率比较高。于是我们都逐渐在变成作家，同时丧失写日记的乐趣。。当然，理论上讲我们仍然可以掏出尘封的日记本，写上一写，但是当你每天12+个小时做在电脑前，电脑已经成为你的notebook的时候，很难说服自己挪动屁股去找个跟不上时代潮流的小本本来，就为了说点不上纲不上线，没啥道理的无病呻吟。。。总的来说，我提倡blog，让我们把所有上不了台面的所谓intuitioin（直觉）都整理成presentable model（模型）吧！
说完blog，再说说互联网。从大一，大二开始上网， 我就发现他以飞快的速度蚕食着我的时间并改变着我的知识结构。本来我是一天花8个小时看闲书，看得开心的要死；很快就变成一天花8个小时上网，而且上完之后完全不知道自己都干了什么。有个经济学家好几百年前就说过一句话，凡是信息都会消耗一种资源：注意力。当信息过剩的时候，我们一定要想办法合理分配自己的注意力。互联网上的信息，说泛滥应该不为过(by the way，现在中文网页已经占所有网上信息的15%了-百度总裁李某)。我们的很多时间，在被合理化配置之前就消耗在了这些网页上。没有他们，我们本来可以精挑细选自己想看的东西，现在，我们早已忘掉了宁缺勿滥的古训，逮着什么看什么了。所以，很早以前，我就是互联网的反对者。他为我们提供信息的同时，让我们忘掉了如何思考。
其实不光是IT，只要是technology就必然对人有反作用。比如，要不是为了给我妈看，我肯定会用英文写这篇东西。（当然我妈的英文也是很好地，您老人家千万不要生气啊:）现在已经养成了习惯，凡是要讲大道理，或者比较曲折的道理，张嘴/落笔就想说/写英语。你看，这就是英语对我的反作用。

Rosenblat yWesleyan University June 24, 2005 Abstract We decompose the beauty premium in an experimental labor market where `employers' determine wages of `workers' who perform a maze-solving task. This task requires a true skill which we show to be unaffected by phys-ical attractiveness. We find a sizable beauty premium and can identify three transmission channels. (1) Physically-attractive workers are more confident and higher confidence increases wages. (2) For a given level of confidence, physically-attractive workers are (wrongly) considered more able by employers. (3) Controlling for worker confidence, physically-attractive workers have oral skills (such as communication and social skills) that raise their wages when they interact with employers. A flower for myself  , good job! April 01 京华烟云借着嗓子疼的理由不肯学习, 看完了京华烟云。赵薇让我很是眼前一亮， 刚开始的时候我看到她还是满脑子小燕子，不过看着看着已经觉得她是姚木兰了。从天真烂漫到成熟稳重甚至委屈求全，赵薇长大了，我也长大了。演荪亚的潘粤明我很喜欢。没办法，谁让咱这孩子骨子里就既叛逆又顽固呢。不知道我啥时候才能象荪亚一样，懂得责任，懂得家庭。。
说来说去还是人家语堂先生的书写的好。他是我很喜欢的一位作家，不是因为文笔，是我认同他的很多看法。比如说，中国人跟西方人比起来，很大的一个特点是我们会抓住每分每秒享受生活的每个细节，所以我们讲究烹饪，讲究衣装，我们的生活已经被五彩缤纷的细节填的满满的，不需要更加抽象或者远大的理想。而西方人的追求大都在精神领域，他们写小说，写戏剧，做实验，钻研科学。。。
我大学时第一次看到这个观点的时候非常impressed，这种对社会的洞察力让我崇拜。其实，社会学家是很了不起的，他们不仅知道某一件事情的前因后果，他们更加知道历史和文化是如何交织的。我喜欢这种全局的，升华的看问题的方式。

The other day I heard a story: someone from Turkey, who really loves Turkey, got an offer from a big firm in the US. He turned down the offer, knowing that once he accepts it, he will never be able to stop in the middle of that career and go back to Turkey.

March 13 兄弟，印记上周看了两本闲书，一个是余华的兄弟（上），一个是付彪一家写的印记，很爽。
兄弟继承而且发扬了余华的写作风格，一种我喜欢的风格。单刀直入，废话少说，以小见大。兄弟这个故事跟活着一样，让人有点错愕，觉得非典型又挺真实。主人公很早熟，很聪明，很狡猾，不知道是不是也很坏。女人又是家里的陪衬和主心骨，像他以前的写农村的书一样。怎么说呢，读的时候确实手不释卷，但读完了过两天吧叽吧叽嘴就觉得没有味儿了。写文革的书太多，写农村的书也太多，多一本，已经不足以让人思考太多了。余华善于用惨烈荒唐的死法发人深省，但是多见了几次之后脑海就只留下了一张照片，而不是一个时代了。相比之下，尘埃落定就可以在我心里待很久很久，而且是个连环画。
印记的成功在于朴实，跟彪哥的成功一样。这确实是我第一次正儿八经地读一本描写中年人的死亡的书。我感到了畏惧。看了这书以后，我每天早上起来都很心慌，不知道自己昨天都干了什么，不知道青春要流逝向哪里。这本书，比傅雷家书更能励志，是从心灵的最深处唤醒人对生命和死亡的忧患意识。我希望，我死的时候，脸上也能带着勇敢和满足的微笑。

March 03 random thoughtsNow I'm finally back into normal student life, after a fairly long winter break... and start to follow a timetable again to keep up with my research. A few days ago, feng said to me: you actually don't really like economics. Nobody said this to me before although I myself sometimes claimed it. Somehow it was a real shock to me to hear it from someone else. I started to ponder... maybe he's right. I have much more passion for many other things, math and psycology, for sure. I'm more interested in animal psycology than human psycology, b/c humans are too evil and complicated to be systematically studied. However, sometimes I do wonder why some men want to, and sometimes actually do, become a woman.
If I were not to follow this depressing (yet refreshing) timetable and spend every free minute on brainless TV series, I would read much more theoretically interesting stuff, starting with Freud, Vanloon and Foucault.
I'm just looking for beautiful excuses for my laziness... and lack of motivation for everything... |
